The Teasley Variety Show

A message from Teasley speech pathologist and Variety Show coordinator Jessica Mills:

Can your child sing… dance… do magic… or have some other unique talent?

If so, we want him or her to be a part of this year’s variety show!

We are showcasing the very best of what our students can do to put on an amazing performance!

The students will have the opportunity to pick up permission slips starting the week of February 6 outside my door.  Permission slips are due back to me NO LATER than Friday, February 17.  Once we determine how many students are interested in participating we will decide on the dates for auditions and rehearsals. 

Permission slips will include a behavior contract for you and your child to sign.  This must be completed in order for your child to participate.  No child can participate without a signed permission slip.  If you have any questions, please contact me at the e-mail address listed below.

Save the date for Teasley Career Day: Friday, March 23, 2012

Teasley families, please save the date for our annual Career Day!  On Friday, March 23, we'll invite volunteers to teach our students about their jobs and how they relate to the content elementary school kids learn on a daily basis.

To enhance the students’ learning experience and help them connect school to work, we’re looking for energetic presenters from a broad range of careers.  Presenters will be assigned to classrooms that are age-appropriate for 20-25 minutes and then rotate to a different classroom. We welcome hands-on activities, visual aids, displays, props, and uniforms.  We can assist with display set-up and technological needs if necessary.

Do you know people who might be dynamic Career Day presenters?  Please ask them to save an hour or two on March 23 for a visit to Teasley and ask them to email Mrs. Harris or Ms. Strother.

We are proud of Sreya, our speller!

All of us at Teasley are very proud of Fifth Grader Sreya for her representation of our school at the county spelling bee last Saturday morning.  Sreya was one of 80 spellers from schools all over the county, including middle schools, who participated in the bee at Kennesaw Mountain High School.  The competition was fierce, and although Sreya did not prevail this time, we commend her efforts and look forward to a successful spelling career in Sixth Grade and beyond!

"Support Cobb Schools" License Plate

A message from Sheri Brante, Executive Director of Cobb Schools Foundation:

Order Your Official "Support Cobb Schools" License Plate Today!  Your School Will Receive $10 For Each Plate Sold!

The Cobb Schools Foundation is excited to announce that we have received approval from the Georgia Department of Revenue and the Department of Motor Vehicles to offer an official "Support Cobb Schools" license plate!  We need to sell at least 1,000 license plates before the plate can be manufactured.  The Foundation will donate $10 for each plate sold by February 3 to your school!

To order your plate, simply print out the attached application, write the name of your school on the top, fill out the form, attach payment and send to the Foundation office.  Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, February 3 for your school to receive credit.  After this initial period, all applications will go through the Department of Motor Vehicles and we will not be able to track them.

You will receive a copy of your application marked "paid" to be used as your receipt.  You will be notified as soon as the plates are available for pick up at your local DMV.  Simply take your receipt into your local DMV and pick up your new plate!  There may be an additional nominal specialty plate fee at time of pick up, however, you will not pay any Ad Valorem taxes.  You will simply renew your tags in the month you always have.  Each year you renew your plate, $10 will be donated to the Foundation to help provide grants for teachers, scholarships for graduating seniors, ASP scholarships for kids in need and so many other programs support by the Foundation.

Please help us get the word out!  Print out the attached application and license plate design poster, write the name of your school on the top, copy front to back and send out!  Pass this on to your friends and family!

You don't have to live in Cobb County to have a "Support Cobb Schools" license plate.  Anyone can order this plate!  Our goal is to sell at least 1,000 before this Friday, February 3, so that we can get approval from the Georgia Legislature to receive $10 for each plate sold. 

Help us be the first school district in Georgia to have our very own license plate and "Support Cobb Schools!"  Show your Cobb County Pride!  Grab a pen and send it in!

Teasley Spelling Champion... again!

Congratulations to Ms. Ragland's Fifth Grader Sreya A. for winning the Teasley Spelling Bee... for the second year in a row!  Wow!!  And congratulations to Mr. Stephens' Fourth Grader Madison E. for being the runner-up!

As always, two students from each Fourth and Fifth Grade class participated.  This was the first year we've had siblings competing against each other -- pretty neat!  There were six or seven Fifth Graders who had participated last year, all looking to grab the top prize this year.  Sreya was just too tough, though, and prevailed again!

Sreya will compete in the next level bee this Saturday, January 28, at Kennesaw Mountain High School.  Last year she made it through four or five rounds against dozens of kids from Cobb County schools.  We can't wait to see how she does this year!

There was one alternate from each class who was ready to participate in the event that a class representative was ill on the day of the bee.  We're proud of these alternates, too!  Thank you for being ready to spell!

A fond farewell to retiring Media Specialist Ellen Murphy

In December, the one and only Mrs. Ellen Murphy retired from her position as our Teasley Media Specialist.  Mrs. Murphy is one of the most selfless, thoughtful, optimistic people we know.  Our team of specialists gave her a little party to let her know how much she has meant to all of us.  Thank you to Mrs. Reiko Sears' Pre-K students for the cute poster!

You'll see a familiar face in the Media Center the next time you visit.  Mrs. Pascaline Ivey is our new Media Specialist!  Mrs. Ivey has worked as a Reading Recovery teacher and a First Grade teacher at Teasley, and she is excited about working alongside Media Center parapro Ana Hogan every day. 



Successful parent information session

Thank you to all of the Teasley families who braved the rainy weather to attend our parent information session about the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, organized by the School and Family Committee.  Second grade teached Lynn Bixler gave a testimony about the importance of class meetings, and then Ms. Strother showed the data that the committee collected from 30 Teasley teachers about how class meetings are going in their classrooms.

Very specials thanks to Cobb County Prevention Intervention member Patti Agatston, who presented talked to the parents about what bullying is (and is not), cyberbullying, the power of the bystander, and how parents can be involved in partnering with schools to keep all kids safe.

FIRST LEGO League update

One of the neatest opportunities at Teasley is being part of one of the FIRST LEGO League teams.  We're so lucky to have coaches, Mr. David Monroe and Ms. Sam Kasraie, who dedicate many afternoons and weekends to working with the third-fifth grade students who have chosen to dedicate their time to building and programming their robots, researching assigned topics, and involving the neighboring community in their endeavors.

Before you speak, T.H.I.N.K.

It's impossible for any person, child or adult, to 100% "take back" words he or she has said.  So before we speak, we must T.H.I.N.K. -- are our words true? helpful? inspiring? necessary? kind?  We'll be emphasizing this concept with some of our classes soon.

This T.H.I.N.K. concept also applies to words sent in an email or text or words posted online.  As Dr. Patti Agatston showed us last week in her talk, if we wouldn't say it in person, we shouldn't say it online.
