The fifth graders had a great time, and learned a great deal, identifying macroinvertabrates collected from the pond behind our school. The purpose of the lesson was to collect and identify macroinvertabrates to analyze the quality of the water they came from.
The students were very surprised at the types of organisms they were identifying. Although macroinvertabrates can be seen with the unaided eye, we used microscopes to take a closer look. The students were amazed at how ferocious these tiny little creatures look up close.
